Giveaway! Modbox mailbox

As a mid-century modern enthusiast, Greg Kelly was frustrated when he couldn’t find a mailbox that complimented the mid-century aesthetic of his home. In the Fall 2013 issue of Atomic Ranch, a reader asked: “Do you know a good source of 50s period mailboxes? In conclusion, the editor stated “…the retro market seems to be wide open.” This collage shows some of the mailboxes he found, with the Sears 1961 “Diamond Jubilee – Sears 75 Years” catalog image in the upper left.  The mailbox was “Specially chosen for Sears Jubilee…

Retro Roadtrip: Little American Hotel Resort in Cheyenne Wyoming

What we love about Mid-Century travel is feeling you’ve been thrown back in time to a period where motor travel was cool, lounging by the pool was the most fun you could have as a kid and Motels took guests seriously and didn’t just provide you with an impersonal place to sleep. Little America in Cheyenne is just such a unique place. Luxurious, but a throw back to another time, with a decorating scheme in the French Provincial style, it’s timeless, but with that old classy motel air that makes…

Heavy with Peach – or "Millions of Peaches, peaches for me"

Wow, is our Peach Tree preggers. I’m about to pick them, but wow, wouldn’t that be uncomfortable for a tree! I remember that 9th month! Anyway, things have been crazy here, Rex has come to work with me (Widget Inc) and so we’re officially self employed. I’m convincing him to share my love of blogging by actually posting here more, so we’ll see. We agreed to have our school board rep over to give his speile and I want our backyard done first….hmmm. I’ve show you the deck, right? Wish…

Meanwhile….The Meltdown!

Ick, blecky dirty snow. We’re sick of it. picture missing I’m posting this mainly as a description of why very little household stuff is going on right now. my passion is our backyard and it’s disgusting. This is also so my Mother can see that we still can’t fully park in front of our house…you can see the curb jutting out at the bottom. Amazing that Denver has never quite worked out how to plow a street.

Thanks for the info on my Pom Pom Junipers!

Thanks to Big Mall Rat (Scott) for his research on my bushes. Even after I gave him a hard time for cutting his down (I do understand hazards when you can’t see out of the driveway!). I’m just thrilled to know what they are. However, I can’t answer the question about when they came into vogue. My 50’s landscaping bush, doesn’t have much about these….and I do think his theory is fairly good…that it was a 70’s thing. I have a 50’s landscaping book but they don’t show any junipers…but…

Our bushes and trimmed and neat

You all may remember our bushes in front of our house: Here’s what a professional does with them. Not that I did a “bad” job, but hoo-whee, I think they look terrific like this! Anyone know what these bushes are? I tried to do a search on evergreens and bushes and can’t seem to find a species. Again maybe part of the unpopularity of 50’s flora and fauna? Oh, and I had a wonderful email from Kristyna in Milwaukee wondering what to do about the “weird spaceship looking exhaust vent…

Our dream: the "right" 50's patio cover.

Unlike a lot of my houseblogging friends, we’ve been in our house 5 and a half years now. We gutted and remodeled the kitchen and we still have several projects in the house that have stalled for practical reasons (like we need our bathrooms) or because of cash flow (we’d love a huge deck out over our garage that would have a fantastic view of the mountains). However, in organizing my flickr pictures today I realized that I take a ton of pictures of basically NOTHING HAPPENING in our back…
