Giveaway! Modbox mailbox

As a mid-century modern enthusiast, Greg Kelly was frustrated when he couldn’t find a mailbox that complimented the mid-century aesthetic of his home. In the Fall 2013 issue of Atomic Ranch, a reader asked: “Do you know a good source of 50s period mailboxes? In conclusion, the editor stated “…the retro market seems to be wide open.” This collage shows some of the mailboxes he found, with the Sears 1961 “Diamond Jubilee – Sears 75 Years” catalog image in the upper left.  The mailbox was “Specially chosen for Sears Jubilee…

OMG! I have to make one of these!

Isn’t this totally adorable? Wow! if I hadn’t vowed to give up my gingerbread house addiction, I’d make this one this year! 🙂 And if you haven’t noticed, we’re completely broke! Not without MANY MANY projects to do around the house, but without the money to complete them. I was thinking about getting an interior design program and maybe sketching out solutions tho…that way when we have money we know where to spend it! 🙂

Around the "Atomic Ranch"

If you’re a mid-century nerd, you probably subscribe to the Atomic Ranch magazine. I look forward to recieving it every other month. Most of the magazine sports VERY modern designs, but this month has a cool article on transistor radios (Rex was wondering why they don’t make I-pods in that style) and a cool follow up on tracking down the architectural roots of a house in Washington state. Someone also tracked down a screen concrete block company! Woo hoo! Now I just have to convince my husband that they are…

Hip house for sale in the 'hood and another site if you're shopping!

I have a new friend who writes for our local (as in neighborhood) newspaper and she turned me onto this house that’s just come up for sale. It’s near Sloan’s lake, which is a neat lake (and getting nicer all the time. I have posted another interior photos on Flickr if you’re interested (or just want to drool – the price is a modest $365,000)….the house is posted here (although the site has been down most of the day…try again later!). I love that 50’s houses are becoming more respected….

Thanks for the info on my Pom Pom Junipers!

Thanks to Big Mall Rat (Scott) for his research on my bushes. Even after I gave him a hard time for cutting his down (I do understand hazards when you can’t see out of the driveway!). I’m just thrilled to know what they are. However, I can’t answer the question about when they came into vogue. My 50’s landscaping bush, doesn’t have much about these….and I do think his theory is fairly good…that it was a 70’s thing. I have a 50’s landscaping book but they don’t show any junipers…but…

Our bushes and trimmed and neat

You all may remember our bushes in front of our house: Here’s what a professional does with them. Not that I did a “bad” job, but hoo-whee, I think they look terrific like this! Anyone know what these bushes are? I tried to do a search on evergreens and bushes and can’t seem to find a species. Again maybe part of the unpopularity of 50’s flora and fauna? Oh, and I had a wonderful email from Kristyna in Milwaukee wondering what to do about the “weird spaceship looking exhaust vent…

Our dream: the "right" 50's patio cover.

Unlike a lot of my houseblogging friends, we’ve been in our house 5 and a half years now. We gutted and remodeled the kitchen and we still have several projects in the house that have stalled for practical reasons (like we need our bathrooms) or because of cash flow (we’d love a huge deck out over our garage that would have a fantastic view of the mountains). However, in organizing my flickr pictures today I realized that I take a ton of pictures of basically NOTHING HAPPENING in our back…

What a 1950's Bargain (or is it?)

Not having been born (or even a twinkle in my Mother’s eye) in the 1950’s, I’m not sure if this is a good price or not, but it seems phenomenal to me these days. I was particularly interested in the front of the house and 1950’s landscaping! It’s amazingly difficult to find any (if you have any sources, I’d be thrilled!) The interior photos are fantastic (I have a few more) and I could post interior 50’s photos forever. Speaking of which we’re redecorating – we’re going to rehang all…
