Help save our pink bathroom

Well it seems life has dealt us a card and we’re going to remodel our PINK bathroom in the next month. We know the tile has been falling off the shower wall for a while, but finally our plumber has determined that the plumbing for the whole shower has to go. So, it’s a rip out and remodel -s eriously we can’t save the tile in the bath.

We could save the tile in the bathroom, but if we even do a few of the changes we want to (like the sink – seriously it’s 70’s and really really ugly – see photo below) then we need more of it and I doubt we can match it.

My husband isn’t fond of the pink (gasp) but I might be able to sell him on pink and black. However if we’re going to redo all the tile, I’d like new 50’s color suggestions.
Also, to add a curve, we have to do ALL of this on a budget. A small budget. So, help 50’s folks!!! I need direction, resources and ideas!
We need a one handled (required by code) tasteful 50’s inspired bath fixture. I need a sink – preferably with space to store stuff – and I need idea on tile combinations in case we have to rip it all out.

And if you live in a cave and haven’t been to “Save the pink bathrooms” – go there now!

oh gosh-I just removed all of our pink shower tile YESTERDAY. Most of it broke though, so I don’t think I would have been able to salvage most of it for you. We’re on a budget & after dealing with tile like yours, we’re going with a tub surround. My husband also wasn’t fond of the pink..
I just posted about it on my blog if you want to check it out.
Good luck!

Many people contact me looking for replacement tile. I try and explain that out of the thousands of manufacturers and 100’s of thousands of colors and designs to find their exact color, size and manufacturer is nearly impossible.
It is a shame to rip out all the tile just because you need a few fill ins. What I suggest to people is to consider putting a large mural on the back wall of the tub. The area taken up by the mural will give you many of your plain field tile to fill in the places where you need them. You can see some photos of line drawings and an original mural I sent to Pam at retrorenovation.com
Another suggestion would be to carefully remove a horizontal band around the room. This can be filled with a decorative border and the removed tiles used as replacements. But it all depends on how the original tiles were installed. If the backing is cement you’ll need a jackhammer to get them out.
There are many ways to save what you have and make it better without ripping it all out. Just have to think outside the box.

hi, mary-frances, are the pink wall tiles really ceramic – or are they plastic. the reason i ask is that i can’t see much grout, leading me to believe they are plastic. i did not hesitate to rip plastic tiles, including pink ones, out of my 3 bathrooms.
