Las Vegas and Mid-Century Icon The Sahara closes today

The Sahara Hotel closes tomorrow, Monday, May 16th at 2:00 pm.  Having gone from big plans of restoration to succumbing to the bad economy, they just couldn’t keep it afloat any longer and it’s closing it’s doors.

The Sahara has a colorful history and it was here the Beatles stayed when they played the Convention Center back in 1964.  From its inception the list of major acts that performed on property is truly staggering and includes Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Sammy Davis Jr., Judy Garland, Marlene Dietrich, Paul Anka, George Carlin, Liza Minnelli, Violetta Villas, Shirley Bassey, Connie Francis, Bill Cosby, Don Rickles, and many more.

It was also the setting of the original Oceans Eleven, starring Frank Sinatra. Here are some more fabulous photos and memories on Classic Las Vegas.

But all the personal stories are the best, do you have any fond Sahara memories?

Updating and renovating? Purist?

I was thinking about renovating this morning – mainly because we’re at a lull on projects until we have some money drop in our lap! 🙂 But I was looking at some real estate ads in Palm Springs (pretty much the mid-century capital) and one mentioned that the kitchen had been “ruined” in an update. There weren’t any pictures, but it got me to thinking about a house we have down the street who ripped
