Mamaroneck Motel, New York

One of our favorite parts of Mid-Century travel is finding those fabulous out of the way motels for an affordable price. One of our biggest challenges on our trip back east was finding something near New York City. We knew we wanted to stay close Mamaroneck-Motel1by – because we were spending the day in Manhattan. Just 21 miles north we found the Mamaroneck Motel.

Although the website doesn’t do it justice, it’s a fabulous retro motel that you wouldn’t notice if you didn’t know it was there.

The motel has 34 rooms that surround a circular flower filled courtyard.  The retro streamlined style is well kept and has a fun atmosphere including a fantastic pizza restaurant just out front (it used to be the motel restaurant).

Resources for Repair of Post-war Housing

The national Trust for Historic Preservation has posted Resources for Repair of Post-war housing. The list seems fairly complete to me…can you all think of others? Would it be helpful to start our own here (for myself, I still think it would be neat to have interior and decorating resources as well. )

Houses of Spirits

A sampling of Los Angeles midcentury, atomic, and retro liquor stores by new contributor Diane Vallere. Read more about her here. You don’t have to wait until the cocktail hour to appreciate the influence that midcentury modern style had on liquor stores all over the country, but you may want to act quick. The atomic aspect of these houses of spirits can still be seen, but disrepair, changes in management, and retiring business owners are

How to build a color scheme

Taken from the “Better Homes and Gardens Decorating Book” Copyright 1956, we thought we’d turn Mid-Century Photo Friday into a learning experience. This week we tackle color – which if you’ve seen full color photos in the 50′s, they had a different interpretation of. I wonder how many interior decorators still follow the following rules?
