The Mecca Motel in Manitou Springs – fabulous!

The Mecca Motel is located right between Old Colorado City and Manitou Springs right outside of Colorado Springs Colorado.

We headed to Colorado Springs to explore and to maybe help the area with a little boost after the wild fires of the summer – there is tons to do (if you’re looking for activities, watch for our posts on Denver Parent).

Family owned for over 30 years, Gary, the owner of the Mecca Motel, shows obvious pride in his little motel – pointing out that “tons of people stop by to take pictures of that sign!”.

The best part is the motel is definitely worth staying in. Clean (although sadly to the retro-minded – modernized rooms), with fun amenities like a retro ice machine that takes tokens, the motel is maintains some retro items – like the ice machine and the pool slide, but it’s very clean and somewhat modernized!

The pool was small, but fun and the kids LOVED the retro slide into it!

The motel is handy – located just outside of Manitou Springs and right after you go through Old Colorado City.  Lots of places to eat and really close to tons of activities including the Manitou Cliff Dwellings. For more information on what to do while you’re there, check out my other post on DenverParent.net.

Trading Spaces: Klare's room….the pictures…..

So, I’m kind of waiting to hear if Trading Spaces will let me dish the “behind the scenes story” and all the really cool dirt about what went on! Summary…the girls, had a blast, said they’d do it again and were very very tired. There were a couple of fights and a couple of “staging” dramas….but you’ll have to check back to see if I’m allowed to talk about any of that! 🙂 So, here’s

The fabulous retro resorts of Wildwood New Jersey!

Beaches, amusement parks, restaurants, activities and some of the most fantastic Mid-Century Resort Architecture and Googie signs anywhere! Where do you find all of this? New Jersey! The Wildwoods began developing as a resort in the last decade of the 19th century. Of interest to Mid-Century fans is the building

Ghost Towns of Route 66 – Glenrio and Endee

While traveling the mother road (also known as Route 66) over spring break, we were fortunate enough to find out about a side road – well, it used to be Route 66 proper, but as Sally said in the movie “Cars”, “The town got bypassed just to save ten minutes of driving.” and that couldn’t ring more true with the towns of Endee and Glenrio. Both are still fantastically picturesque but in a sad haunting

A Route 66 Preservation Project needs help

From the “Save the Boots Motel Facebook page” The National Park Service, Route 66 Corridor Grant Program awarded the historic Boots Motel owners in Carthage, MO. a matching grant in 2012 to remove the 1978 roof addition and restore the structure to it’s original appearance, and qualify this venerable Route 66 Icon’s placement on the National Register of Historical Places. The “Raze the Roof” fundraising effort is underway and the Volunteer event to remove the
