Retro Roadtrip: Silver Saddle Motel in Manitou Springs

Our second night in Manitou Springs we decided to try another mid-century motel – and we were lucky to stumble on the Silver Saddle Motel – locally owned by Artur Bryja and Brittany Kelly, we found the staff very friendly, the rooms andd facitilies clean and it was pet friendly!

Although our room didn’t have one, they offer in-room Jacuzzi tubs and a cute  heated outdoor pool.  They offer non-smoking only double and single bed guest rooms,  on-site laundry facilities, business center, and a nice variety in their seasonal continental breakfast. They also offer in-room coffee makers, high-speed wireless Internet (which was a bit spotty in connection), A/C and heating units, and convenient front door parking.

Taken from the “Better Homes and Gardens Decorating Book” Copyright 1956, we thought we’d turn Mid-Century Photo Friday into a learning experience. As usual you can leave a link to your Mid-Century Photo Friday in the comments.

The Best of Times, The Worst of Times

Nostalgia is often described as a wistful desire to return to a former time, an era when things were simpler, better, less stressful, more fun (insert your descriptor here). The truth, however, is that regardless of the period of time you live in or where you live it is the best of times and the worst of times. Nostalgia is a great deal like vintage pictures, it is one dimensional, a moment in time taken out

Retro Roadtrip: The Sunset Motel

This motel came as a recommendation from two different readers, Jim Ross and Jerry McClanahan with the EZ66 guide.  We added it to our stays along Route 66 in New Mexico. This little motel is a bargain, clean, updated (good or bad depending on whether preservation is a priority or modern comforts) and family owned and operated. Most rooms have have a flat screen TV and free wireless access. They serve a small continental breakfast

Save the Boots Motel in Carthage

I realize this motel was built in 1939, which technically makes it out of our realm for 50’s motels, but it’s along the famed Route 66 and frankly it’s a cool motel: However like many Motels it’s endangered and yesterday The Historic Boots Motel was auctioned on the Carthage Courthouse steps, and the new owner is the lien holder, the Carthage Hometown Bank, which placed the only bid of $101,000. Members of the local media,
