The Mecca Motel in Manitou Springs – fabulous!

The Mecca Motel is located right between Old Colorado City and Manitou Springs right outside of Colorado Springs Colorado.

We headed to Colorado Springs to explore and to maybe help the area with a little boost after the wild fires of the summer – there is tons to do (if you’re looking for activities, watch for our posts on Denver Parent).

Family owned for over 30 years, Gary, the owner of the Mecca Motel, shows obvious pride in his little motel – pointing out that “tons of people stop by to take pictures of that sign!”.

The best part is the motel is definitely worth staying in. Clean (although sadly to the retro-minded – modernized rooms), with fun amenities like a retro ice machine that takes tokens, the motel is maintains some retro items – like the ice machine and the pool slide, but it’s very clean and somewhat modernized!

The pool was small, but fun and the kids LOVED the retro slide into it!

The motel is handy – located just outside of Manitou Springs and right after you go through Old Colorado City.  Lots of places to eat and really close to tons of activities including the Manitou Cliff Dwellings. For more information on what to do while you’re there, check out my other post on DenverParent.net.

missile silos

If you’re looking for a peaceful country home that can also keep you safe from natural disaster, social upheaval, disease and even zombies, this home is for you. A decommissioned Cold War-era missile silo, located in the Adirondock Mountains of upstate New York, recently hit the market for $750,000. While it’s not much to look at from the outside, if you go 40 feet below ground, you’ll find a 3,200–square-foot silo home, including one bedroom,

If you like this sort of thing, check out his blog regularly because he always knows the illustrators and gives an extra insight into those magazine covers we all love! This one is an especially fabulous look into mid century residential architecture!

Resources for Repair of Post-war Housing

The national Trust for Historic Preservation has posted Resources for Repair of Post-war housing. The list seems fairly complete to me…can you all think of others? Would it be helpful to start our own here (for myself, I still think it would be neat to have interior and decorating resources as well. )

Route 66 Still Kicks and Seven things you didn’t know

Great article on CNN about Route 66 and the Seven things you didn’t know – just a few of the points: 1. Over 2,000 of Route 66’s original 2,448 connected miles are still approachable, if not always drivable. 2. John Steinbeck conceived of “The Grapes of Wrath” on a late 1937 summer drive from Chicago west on Route 66, which he called the “long concrete path.” The rest of the article is here. Interestingly, the
