THE MOTELS OF ROUTE 66, an interactive documentary film and book coming soon

“The Motels of Route 66”, a project “in the works”, is documentary film and accompanying book about the iconic vintage motels alongside the Main Street of America, Route 66. The project itself will be traveling the road and capturing the tales within the walls from the motel owners, the travelers and the architecture itself.

According to their website, the filmmaker and his crew will embark on a month-long journey along the 2,448 miles of Route 66 between Chicago and Los Angeles, capturing the stories of the motels and those who run them. The project will not only portray the vintage motels in both film and photo along Route 66, it will also feature day-in-the-life glimpses into some of the uniquely American people who run these classic sleep establishments along with the travelers who stay the night.

They are also looking for people to submit their own photography, videos and stories to share with the online community.

The project is being led by Emmy-nominated Simon Cantlon (Director/Producer) and Memphis, TN-based production company Paper Moon Films. They still appear to be soliciting fundraising for the project so if you’re interested in helping out – check out the link.

I’ve read his blog for ages – and he has an awesome Flickr group for Retro Teen art and Retro Kid – both of which

Ghost Towns of Route 66 – Glenrio and Endee

While traveling the mother road (also known as Route 66) over spring break, we were fortunate enough to find out about a side road – well, it used to be Route 66 proper, but as Sally said in the movie “Cars”, “The town got bypassed just to save ten minutes of driving.” and that couldn’t ring more true with the towns of Endee and Glenrio. Both are still fantastically picturesque but in a sad haunting
