The Fabulous Satellite Hotel in Colorado Springs

Our last stop in Colorado Springs was our favorite – architecturally, accommodations AND price (can you get better than that?)

For a very reasonable price you can literally step back in time to the fabulous Satellite Hotel – opened in 1969, it’s fantastic 60’s Architecture won it an article on Waymarking.com as an example of Googie Architecture.

There doesn’t seem to be a record of who the architect is, but according to one of the gregarious guests in the hotel bar, there’s a twin of this building over in Hawaii. The top of the building used to boast a radio station, however, it’s now been converted to offices.

The Satellite is the home  to 241 condominium owners and it is operated and maintained to meet the high standards of these permanent residents and there has been some controversy over keeping the hotel rooms . They used to be the closest hotel to the airport, but times have changed and as business has slowed, the hotel rooms mostly lie empty.  As mid-century hotel lovers, we’d love to see more publicity on this great hotel so they will keep their rooms!

The architecture – ooo, la, la!

The staff was friendly and helpful and the room was clean and modern. Good internet connection and we really enjoyed our stay here.
