Retro Roadtrip: Phoenicia Lodge in the Catskills

Eight years ago, Brian and Sara, two Brooklynites, stumbled upon an old roadside lodge where the paint had faded, the floors were cracked, and most of the toilets rocked from side to side, but they were able to see the honest simplicity in the humble cabins that appealed to their desire for a simpler life.

The Lodge uses period-specific furniture and fixtures to marry mid-century style with modern amenities like air conditioning, Wi-Fi, free DVD rentals and eco-conscious products.  They also offer a free continental breakfast and welcome dogs!

True to it’s Mid-Century roots, the Phoenicia Lodge has been restored to marry the spirit of the past with the comfort and convenience of today.

The rooms, cottages and suites are located in a wooded valley within Catskill State Park between Route 28 and the Esopus Creek, surrounded by the gorgeous 16093_10151582209298466_1106366621_nCatskill Mountains and just around the corner from Main Street Phoenicia’s fantastic shops and restaurants. All of this is just 2-1/2 hours from New York City, so the majority of guests are city escapees for the weekend.

It’s been a complex project to undertake, says co-owner Sara Loughlin, “We were new to inn-keeping so of course we had a huge learning curve to conquer initially. It’s a challenging business but it’s also very satisfying when our guests are happy. Between the number of repeat guests we see, plus the great online reviews people have given us, we’re so gratified to be able deliver what people want. We’re their cozy, comfortable home-away-from-home.”

Century 21 domed theater is worthy of being listed in the National Register of Historic Places.

We’ve written about the endangered domed theaters in California in the past, and a small victory was won this April by the State Historical Resources Commission agreed that the former Century 21 theater in San Jose is worthy of being listed in the National Register of Historic Places. In an article from the Eichler Network, the owner of the Century 21, however, has opposed the listing and wants to tear the dome down. Being named

Ohio House Motel Chicago – a survivor

Distinguished by its fabulous diamond shaped exterior, the Ohio House is a fabulous example of mid-century architecture right in the middle of downtown Chicago. Other architectural points of interest include the matching suspended sign, held up by a geometric metal grid which is itself reflected in the pattern block fence that runs along Ohio Street. Rough-faced stone walls and a large stainless steel sign on the east facade add to it’s distinctly Chicago Mid-Century design.

Updating and renovating? Purist?

I was thinking about renovating this morning – mainly because we’re at a lull on projects until we have some money drop in our lap! 🙂 But I was looking at some real estate ads in Palm Springs (pretty much the mid-century capital) and one mentioned that the kitchen had been “ruined” in an update. There weren’t any pictures, but it got me to thinking about a house we have down the street who ripped
