Retro Roadtrip: Phoenicia Lodge in the Catskills

Eight years ago, Brian and Sara, two Brooklynites, stumbled upon an old roadside lodge where the paint had faded, the floors were cracked, and most of the toilets rocked from side to side, but they were able to see the honest simplicity in the humble cabins that appealed to their desire for a simpler life.

The Lodge uses period-specific furniture and fixtures to marry mid-century style with modern amenities like air conditioning, Wi-Fi, free DVD rentals and eco-conscious products.  They also offer a free continental breakfast and welcome dogs!

True to it’s Mid-Century roots, the Phoenicia Lodge has been restored to marry the spirit of the past with the comfort and convenience of today.

The rooms, cottages and suites are located in a wooded valley within Catskill State Park between Route 28 and the Esopus Creek, surrounded by the gorgeous 16093_10151582209298466_1106366621_nCatskill Mountains and just around the corner from Main Street Phoenicia’s fantastic shops and restaurants. All of this is just 2-1/2 hours from New York City, so the majority of guests are city escapees for the weekend.

It’s been a complex project to undertake, says co-owner Sara Loughlin, “We were new to inn-keeping so of course we had a huge learning curve to conquer initially. It’s a challenging business but it’s also very satisfying when our guests are happy. Between the number of repeat guests we see, plus the great online reviews people have given us, we’re so gratified to be able deliver what people want. We’re their cozy, comfortable home-away-from-home.”
